Pierced in the Heart begins with unfathomable tragedy, but it emerges on the other side as a tale of blazing courage and a series of beautiful vignettes of the love of a Savior who longs for His children to be restored. As a woman who has suffered many years in silent shame hiding my bipolar disorder, I found Bonnie’s book to be like applying a healing salve to years of misplaced feelings of guilt and regret. The raw, unfettered honesty with which she so bravely weaves her story maintains authenticity while directing our gaze heavenward to the Mighty Counsellor who binds our wounds and sets the captives free!

Bonnie Brooks’s memoir is deeply moving. She brings you into a world of deep mental pain, self-destruction, tragedy, and then triumph. Anyone who has ever lost someone to suicide will feel the power in her work. Brooks demonstrates how the ripple effect of one single act impacts an entire family for decades. At the moments when you feel the deepest despair, there is healing and hope. Bonnie’s story is inspiring, showing that no matter what our life experiences are, we can transcend them and go on to help ourselves and others.

Pierced in the Heart is much more than a book—it is a lived-out life. Bonnie describes the unfolding revelation of her personal journey. She shares not only the wounds of her heart but also how she has been liberated and how her experience of God’s “kiss” has impacted the course of her life. Bonnie’s insights inspire me to live the life I only dream about and how it is possible, though broken and wounded, to dance a new dance by being still long enough to hear God whisper to my heart. So long as I practice this one thing, I will never be the same.

Bonnie has told a very personal story of discovery, understanding, and healing. It takes courage to be open and honest with ourselves. It has been proven time and time again that this is the only way to heal: we cannot heal or change what we do not acknowledge. Bonnie’s story proves this—she has learned to let go and move on. This book will bring many readers to the realization that suffering is cured when we acknowledge our past, deal with it, and let go. Bonnie’s journey has not only changed and transformed her life, it has saved it. Reading this book may well be the catalyst that saves others!

I am in awe of Bonnie Brooks’ tenacious strength. Bonnie’s story and writing style took me on a guided tour into the darkest corners of life that people seldom talk about, making it possible for me to personally experience the horror of many kinds of loss. Even after twenty-three years as a pastor and ten years of work at Choices Seminars, where I have watched countless people come to terms with loss and healing, the book has still profoundly impacted my appreciation of the pain that many people suffer in silence. The best part for me was my front row seat where I could observe the powerful commitment it takes to rise above it all and carry on and, at the same time, cheer for the joy of Bonnie’s healing. Pierced in the Heart is an encouragement to all who need to find hope and healing from the stories that often remain hidden deep in their memories.

Pierced in the Heart: The Miracle of Healing After Grief and Loss is a personal litany which relates the impact of grief on the author Bonnie Brooks. Ms. Brooks really spoke to my heart with her written words. I like the way that she combined her experiences with words representing a conversation between God and herself. This tactic creates a very intimate aura. You feel as though it is just you and God having a quiet reunion within the book. Pierced in the Heart is an excellent book highlighting mental illness. There is, in fact, a light at the end of the tunnel in respect of attaining help for persons who suffer from mental disorders.

In her book Pierced in the Heart: The Miracle of Healing after Grief and Loss, Bonnie J. Brooks takes us through her painful personal journey which started when she was only five years old. Her life was completely shattered when her mother committed suicide. Bonnie continued to suffer when later her younger brother committed suicide. Living with an abusive husband for over 10 years did not help. Through understanding God’s unconditional love for her, she finally allowed herself to grieve and it was only then that she started to heal. The book emphasizes the importance of accepting our loss and letting ourselves grieve for those we have lost as that is the only way we can go on.
